Interview preparation - general advice

Prior to your interview, your DOCS Consultant will help prepare you for your interview with your prospective employer. They will endeavour to meet with you face to face but when this is not possible they will contact you over the phone.

This preparation will include the following:

  • For those with open applications, the Consultant will reconfirm the reasons you gave for wanting to make the move and what you are looking for in a new role
  • For those who have been headhunted they will reiterate that the client might not realise that you are a headhunted candidate and that questions, such as “Why did you apply for this job?” can be expected
  • Confirm where the interview will take place, including: Address, telephone, names of interviewers, time of interview, directions to office
  • Advise on the appropriate interview attire (dress code), should you be unsure
  • Review the specific details of the position and advise you of the skills and experience expected by the client, including:
      • duties and responsibilities of the position
      • reporting relationships
      • working environment
      • size and make up of department
      • future opportunities
      • client's interview procedure
      • why the position is open and information about the person who last held it
      • tell you where you would be based should you be offered the job
  • Provide you with specific details of the company you are applying to, including the client’s history and future plans, the size of the company and who their major competitors are
  • Tell you about the client and the people responsible for the interview, such as career backgrounds, personal information, likes/dislikes, hobbies, family, how they act in interview, etc…
  • Advise what you can expect from the interview, how long the interview will last and what type of questions to expect
  • Review points of interest in your background that would interest the client and should be emphasised during the interview. Help you to develop mini stories to take care of the common questions that will be asked. Remember: the client believes in what you can do for them supported by your past accomplishments. They will also coach you in how to interview in the future tense i.e. ‘Here’s what I will do for you…’
  • Advise you how to sell your ability and desire to do the job
  • Let you know the salary you can expect and advise you how to handle questions concerning salary.
  • Help you to develop a list of good, solid questions to ask but to keep your answers brief and to the point
  • Remind you to be enthusiastic in the interview
  • Arrange a time when they will call you after the interview.
